Vasudha Thozhur was born on October 14, 1956 in Mysore
city. She has trained in Madras (now Chennai) and in England. She completed
her Diploma in Painting from the College of Arts and Crafts, Madras in 1979
after which she did her post Diploma in Painting at the Croydon School of
Art and Design in the United Kingdom. She presently lives and works in
Madras.
Vasudha has not restricted herself to a single medium. She works with water
colours as well as oils and the features of one media flow into the other to
remarkable effect. Her use of colour is energizing and her paintings,
non-judgmental. The bold and forceful gestures never fail to evoke a
response from the viewer. Vasudha’s paintings reflect a strong element of
drawing. One particularly notices the use of lines which is in keeping with
her belief of their importance.
Interestingly, her work is non-committal in the sense that it defies all
attempts at leading the viewer to a single interpretation. The use of a
number of metaphors within a painting encourages each one to interpret her
work in their own way depending on their past experiences and the feelings
evoked by her creations. The various images take birth in Vasudha’s
imagination and are not representations of the phenomenal world as it were.
She has a number of exhibitions to her credit including a 2-person show at
the Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris.
